This issue dives into the stories of the under-represented efforts of LGBTQ+-owned emerging brands, creatives, and entrepreneurs. We demonstrate LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs' success and ability to thrive in business while remaining true to their identity. In our newly added section, "Troo Spotlight," we bring the stories of three of my personal friends in the beauty industry, makeup artists and entrepreneurs Freddy Lopez and Mercedes Gramajo, and hair stylist Robert Douglas. In Home Design, Nigerian-born Stephanie Fintan, founder and creative director of Studio Fintan, based in Ontario, Canada, shares her focus on elevating living spaces through accessible e-design. Get ready to drool in Culinary as we bring you six features taking us through the experiences and stories of some established and up-and-coming entrepreneurs. Be inspired by SF-based chocolatier Carol Gancia. Jake Bullock and Luke Anderson are co-owners of Cann Social Tonics, the best-selling THC Beverage in the U.S., and the no-nonsense Chef Silvana Salcido Esparza talks about all things food and more. In travel, contributing writer Filipa Araújo transports us with her mesmerizing imagery and writing in "Free to Travel Queer." I am obsessed with Rich Mnisi and the Phluid project's initiatives, designs, and bold, colorful energy in fashion. This issue will dazzle and take you on a fun and colorful journey of learning about the revolutionary brands and entrepreneurs in the LGBTQ+ space. Be Inspired!

In Ghana , we plant over twenty different tree species through our reforestation system called “syntropic farming,” which creates both a forest and fruit trees, enabling the local community to eat and sell the fruit as we create a forest. We also support an educational program teaching Ghanaians entrepreunership. In Thailand , we plant over forty different tree species, creating a habitat for elephants and other endangered animals, as well as a food source for the local community and the animals. In the Philippines , we plant thirteen different tree species and for each tree planted, we remove 1 kg of plastic from the ocean in the Philippines.

ear TrooRa Readers, I’m Morgan Bernard, Associate Editor of TrooRa Magazine, and I am thrilled to present this year’s Special Sports Issue. As a recent addition to the TrooRa team, I eagerly immersed myself in my role, kicking off with a feature on the dynamic world of professional women’s soccer in the United States. In this year’s Special Sports Issue, our writers have meticulously crafted stories that not only delve into the lives of modern athletes and the thrill of competition but also uncover the challenges they face after the final whistle. From a comprehensive exploration of the National Women’s Soccer League’s evolution, where players are advocating for fair pay and a secure work environment, to the intriguing stories of athletes who have ventured into the culinary world, using food as a medium to inspire the next generation, we offer our readers an exclusive glimpse into an often overlooked side of sports.
Our focus for this year’s Special Sports Issue was to find and share stories in sports that are often neglected and give a voice to those who may not have had an opportunity to share their story. Our writers interviewed former pro athletes, reported on the new wave of sports tourism, dove into the history of the Olympics, and much more. This issue takes our readers around the world, highlighting stories from our Bay Area backyard to South Africa, Denmark, and Beyond. Our writers worked tirelessly to shine a light on a new side of athletics, revealing the resilience of pro athletes as they transition to civilian life. It also shares insights into how modern home gyms have become integral in our digital age and how meditation may be the key to unlocking our potential. Dive into our latest issue and see for yourself. Sincerely,
Morgan Bernard Associate Editor

Hello TrooRa Readers, Welcome to the 2024 Sports Issue of TrooRa Magazine! As the founder, creative director, and executive editor in chief, it is my pleasure to present this special edition that takes a deep dive into the dynamic world of sports. This issue is particularly significant, as it not only highlights the athletic prowess and captivating stories of athletes who often remain on the sidelines but also sheds light on the essential themes of mental health, diversity, and innovation in sports. At TrooRa, we believe that sports are more than just games; they are a reflection of society, culture, and the human spirit. Our goal with this issue is to showcase the multifaceted nature of sports and the incredible individuals who push boundaries both on and off the field. We have curated a collection of stories that celebrate achievements, confront challenges, and inspire change. This issue features in-depth interviews with some remarkable figures, including Ms. Olympia Sheryl Grant, San Francisco 49er Austin Bryant, former professional soccer player Devante Dubose, and many more. Their journeys offer insights into the dedication, resilience, and mental fortitude required to excel at the highest levels of competition. We also take a look into the often overlooked but critical topic of athlete mental health, exploring the pressures they face and the support systems that are vital for their well-being.
In addition, we are proud to introduce emerging brands and innovative technologies that are shaping the future of sports. From advancements in athletic performance to breakthroughs in sports medicine, this issue highlights the cutting-edge developments that are transforming the industry. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our contributors, copy editors, graphic designers, and the entire team whose passion and expertise have brought this issue to life. A special welcome and thank you to our new Associate Editor, Morgan Bernard, who has taken on the task of writing our editor’s note. I am confident you will enjoy reading the pieces the TrooRa team has crafted moving forward. Their storytelling and ability to capture the essence of each experience is truly remarkable. I am also grateful to our readers, whose support and engagement fuel our mission to create a platform that amplifies diverse voices and promotes equity in all spheres. Thank you for being a part of the TrooRa community. We hope this Sports Issue inspires you, sparks conversations, and encourages a deeper appreciation for the incredible world of sports.

scholarship to Virginia Tech. But why soccer? Someone once told Dubose that he was too short for basketball and not big enough to follow in his father’s footsteps to American football. Soccer, it would seem, was inevitable. Still, there was a great distance between playing for his local soccer club and the halls of Virginia Tech. Having a strong support network is as essential as talent and discipline when it comes to making it as a professional athlete in the US. As Dubose puts it, “Where you start in sports is ultimately where you’ll finish.” So, after a successful college career as a defender with the Hokies, he was ready to pursue a life in professional soccer. THE PRESENT TODAY’S CHALLENGES In soccer, a player will only have control over the ball for around 2 percent of his overall playtime. Dubose tells me what players do with the remaining 98 percent when the ball is off his feet matters just as much during a game. He’s finding the

with professional sports. Its absence leaves behind a void familiar to athletes across the US, particularly those involved in The Beautiful Game. When asked what pushes him forward these days, he replied coaching. Through coaching, Dubose takes principles he applies to his own life and his ongoing commitment to youth sports.

the Selection National U15 team. As she grew older, her skills only sharpened, allowing her to become a key player on the U17 and U20 teams. Her prowess as a goalkeeper earned her the title of the second national best goalkeeper of U20 in CONCACAF in 2018, a remarkable feat for someone so young. Despite facing challenges, including an unsuccessful stint with a club in France, Ambroise’s determination never wavered. She chose to continue her career in the United States, balancing her education and soccer career at Florida National University (FNU). Her dedication bore fruit when she was selected as an All-American First Team Goalkeeper by the USCAA in 2023, further solidifying her reputation as a top-tier goalkeeper. At just nineteen years old, Ambroise, along with the Fédération Haïtienne de Football–Feminine, made history by participating in the FIFA World Cup held in New Zealand and Australia. This monumental event showcased her talent on an international stage and highlighted the growing prominence of Haitian women in soccer. Ambroise’s performance was a source of pride for her country, inspiring many young girls in Haiti to pursue their dreams in sports.
Nahomie Ambroise, an international goalkeeper for the Haiti National Women’s Team, has captured the hearts of many with her exceptional talent and dedication to the sport of soccer. Born November 13, 2003, in Pétit-Goâve, Haiti, Ambroise’s journey is a testament to her resilience, skill, and unyielding passion for the game. Ambroise’s story begins in Pétit-Goâve, where she was born into a loving family who soon moved to Léogâne. It was here that Ambroise’s love for soccer began to flourish. From the tender age of six, she could often be found kicking a ball around, her eyes gleaming with the dream of making it big in the world of soccer. Her early training started in local clubs, where she quickly stood out due to her innate talent and drive. Clubs like Goals Academy and Anacaona de Léogâne were among the first to recognize her potential. Her journey took a significant turn when she joined Little Haiti Football Club, a club known for nurturing young talents. Ambroise’s professional journey is dotted with numerous achievements. Her talent did not go unnoticed and, soon, she was playing with

he idea of a home gym still conjures humorous images of a dusty treadmill doubling as a clothes hanger. But how much has really changed? A lot, actually. In the quiet sanctum of their homes, many have carved out corners and basements dedicated to an activity once confined to communal spaces. Festooned with more than stark mirrors and metal, the home gyms of today extend beyond utilitarian fitness courts in the same way that fitness has become more than just a tool to chisel your body. Today, the home gym is a new face of the old idea: a burgeoning sanctuary where the clinks of dumbbells accompany self-reflection, and the rush of an early morning spin class breathes life into the day ahead. But the shift from public gyms to private fitness spaces did not happen overnight. Its strong roots in market development and technological advancements are only the surface. Below, it's a complex tale of societal change. The history of home fitness stretches from exclusive practices for the affluent to a widespread, accessible phenomenon shaped by shifts in trends, technological innovation, and notable fitness personalities (did someone say "Arnold?").

Chef Rasmus Kofoed and the radical transformation at Geranium
WRITTEN BY CARY WONG

"Are we going to watch the big game?"
and its location are indeed a spiritual match made in heaven. Chef Kofoed is the only chef to have won the gold, silver, and bronze medals—and the most awarded chef—in Bocuse d’Or, the prestigious biennial world chef championship. He also coached Team Hungary to win the expanded version of Bocuse d’Or Europe in 2016 and mentored Team Denmark to win the global competition in 2019. Drawing from his experiences throughout the gauntlet, he emphasized the symbiotic relationship between competition and coaching, each informing and enriching the other.
This is the first thought many diners have when they arrive at Geranium. It’s an uncommon site located on the eighth floor of the Parken Stadium, where FC Copenhagen and Denmark's national football team reside. The beautiful kitchen faces the stadium's awe- inspiring European football pitch. The fact that this gigantic sporting structure houses one of the best restaurants in the world may seem incongruent and shocking to some. However, a deeper dive into the backgrounds and achievements of the establishment and its chef/co- owner, Rasmus Kofoed, reveals that the restaurant

I n today’s world, everyone’s path to success is unique. Chef Ron Young, the driving force behind Food Vision, shared the incredible journey from being a student- athlete at Alabama A&M University to a professional player in the Canadian Football League. After that, he worked as a line cook and a retail store employee before finally becoming a culinary sensation. Along his journey, he made influential connections with athletes and celebrities. Chef Young's athletic background has influenced his approach to the culinary arts, emphasizing the importance of discipline and dedication. He tailors his services to meet the dietary needs of athletes, ensuring optimal performance through wholesome and flavorful meals. One such example is his work with quarterback Kyler Murray, whose part-Korean background means he is used to eating in a certain way. Chef Young sat down with Murray’s mom to review the food she made during Murray’s childhood to find a way to make his favorites as healthy as possible. He calls the process “watching tape as a chef.” His cuisine—a vibrant fusion of Caribbean and Latin flavors that come from his Jamaican mother—reflects his bold personality and commitment to delivering flavorful experiences. He and his kitchen team, which includes a catering coordinator and a prep cook, make and deliver these fresh, healthy, and tasty dishes to his clients. To better understand Chef Young's particular flair, we asked him to design a multi- course meal representing his professional journey. He proposed a summer fruit salad with a black pepper raspberry sauce as the starter. The main course would be filet mignon with mashed potatoes and lobster tail served with a creamy sauce. From here, the dessert would feature his unique take on peach cobbler, a cupcake topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel drizzle. Each dish is a favorite from his younger Tasty Visions Chef Ron's Journey from the Kitchen to the Stars WRITTEN BY CARY WONG

San Francisco’s Narwhal Divers: Deep Sea Journeys for Queer and Trans People
WRITTEN BY CRISTINA DEPTULA

On Narwhal Divers journeys, LGBT people can meet others who share their interests and enjoy a safe and welcoming environment. “It’s just such a relief to be able to be fully yourself and not have to worry how people on the boat will react,” Kowell says. “And to not be the only LGBT person there.” DIVING FOR DIVERSITY Kowell, a proud trans and queer person, brings the spirit of community organizing to underwater adventures among the sharks and coral reefs. o Niko Kowell, the sea belongs to a colorful and diverse community of life—including an inclusive group of human divers. As founder of San Francisco’s (SF) Narwhal Divers, Kowell combines both of his passions: scuba diving and serving the LGBT community. A narwhal looks like a small whale with a horn and is called the “unicorn of the sea.” Kowell chose them as a mascot because unicorns are sometimes an icon for the LGBT community and people who are unique. Narwhal Divers asserts on social media that their goal is to build a queer, and particularly trans, community around diving. This amazing community has snorkeled around Cozumel, Puerto Vallarta, Carmel/Monterey, and other North American locations. They also explore the ecology of sea life through trips to aquariums and museums.

S amantha Woj, then a Masters student in art therapy, had broken her ankle and felt cooped up. Looking at the home gym she’d set up in the basement of her family home, she joked with her sister that she might as well roll a soccer ball in a tub of paint since she wouldn't be able to play the game for a while. "Do it!" her sister said, and out of a mixture of boredom and curiosity, Woj found an old canvas, dipped the ball in the paint, and started.
disorder that affects the fingers and toes. She has "two fingers on each hand," as her Insta bio reads, adding, "What's your superpower?" Athletes' Portraits That Appear to Live and Breathe Looking at her work, it’s evident that Woj's hands are her superpower. Her artwork is stunning, with energy, depth, and dimension. Using sports equipment, she creates both abstract paintings and detailed portraits. The abstract work is a play on color and texture, made unique by her use of spherical, imprinted balls as her paintbrushes. You feel like you could get lost in them, following the intriguing shapes, the colors, and the surprising emotions that emerge from the paint.
"Straight away, I loved the texture," Woj said. "It reminded me of being an athlete, of the traces and marks you make while playing sports." She had experimented with various art forms during her studies, but this one felt right—like she could finally convey everything she wanted. Since childhood, Woj has turned to sports and the arts to express herself and fit in with her peers. At times, she felt different from other kids because she was born with ectrodactyly, a congenital

THE RISE OF TODD PATRICK WITH DESYRÉE NICOLE’S BLEND OF ATHLETICISM WITH HIGH FASH I ON FOR TRIUMPH
In the world of fashion, there's often a fine line between sporty and chic, between the court and the catwalk. For Desyrée Nicole, the
founder of TODD PATRICK, this line is a seamless blend of athletic prowess and nonchalant elegance. I had the pleasure of catching up with Desyrée to delve into her fascinating journey from the basketball court to the renowned Next in Fashion Netflix show and her New York style brand, sported by NFL players and NBA stars.

G rowing up in the vibrant college town of Ypsilanti,
Michigan, Desyrée's passion for sports was ignited early on. As a standout basketball player, she soared to success, earning a full-ride scholarship to Eastern Michigan University, where she was the starting point guard, with a championship under her belt to boot. But life has a funny way of leading us down unexpected paths, and for Desyrée, a pivotal moment came when her dreams of a professional basketball career took an unexpected turn. Instead of dwelling on setbacks, she pivoted toward a new passion: fashion. "I was inspired to explore what lay beyond basketball," Desyrée reminisced. "I dove headfirst into the world of fashion, reconnecting with high-profile athletes and venturing into the realm of styling NFL players." Drawing inspiration from her own experiences and the vibrant energy of the Big Apple, she embarked on a journey of self-discovery and reinvention. Armed with nothing but her raw talent and unbridled ambition, Desyrée set out to carve her path in the fashion industry. And thus, TODD PATRICK was born—a brand that seamlessly merges the worlds of athletic performance and high fashion. Teaming up with her life and business partner, Gabriella Paulino, she launched the menswear brand in 2016, serving a clientele that includes NBA and NFL players such as Rodney McLeod and Jourdan Lewis. Desyrée's keen eye for design and her intimate understanding of athletes' needs have earned her the
admiration of professional sports stars from the NFL and NBA alike. When asked about her approach to designing for athletes, Desyrée emphasized the importance of catering to a diverse range of body types and preferences. "Athletes are at the forefront of my mind when I design," she explained. "We create for the big guys, the guys with muscles, ensuring that our designs accommodate a spectrum of body types." According to Desyrée, “[These collaborations] mark pivotal moments in my career, arriving at just the right time, with each person bringing their own set of desires and needs to the table.”

Game FACE Exploring the Intersection of Sports and Skin Health! How these Game-Changing Brands Are Reshaping Athlete Self-Care
WRITTEN BY NIZIE N. LOKMAN , FCIM

t he typical athlete is focused solely on training their strength, endurance, and performance, not their skin health. However, some athletes are as committed to maintaining their skin’s health as their training regimens. The concept of skin health and beauty might seem like an unexpected focus, but these athletes prioritize it. It's fascinating to see how skin rituals have evolved beyond the surface. The consumer world is ever-changing. Today’s brands seek to respond to consumers’ real struggles and explore new ways of communicating their missions and making a profound change in the world. TrooRa Magazine shines the light on these rising brands as they empower athletes to feel confident in their own skin. OARS + ALPS’ FEMALE FOUNDERS TAP INTO A MARKET BEYOND THEMSELVES Oars + Alps, a standout, men-focused skincare brand, was founded by Mia Saini Duchnowski and Laura Lisowski Cox. The two female founders took an alternative path, choosing entrepreneurship over stability when they left their corporate jobs at Bloomberg TV in 2015. While most female founders focus on the women’s market, Duchnowski and Cox concentrated strictly on the men’s market. Inspired by their husbands—who were often too busy taking care of everything but themselves—the two women launched a clean skincare brand for men. Duchnowski and Cox know what men want from their skincare routines: low-priced, high-quality products that leave out the harsh chemicals and ingredients that cause breakouts and hormone imbalances. That knowledge gave Oars + Alps a leg up on the competition and made the brand
synonymous with men’s skincare. Duchnowski and Cox turned the brand into a successful business within three years, resulting in SC Johnson acquiring it for $20 million in 2019. The brand has grown ever since. In December 2023, Oars + Alps was featured in Forbes’ 20 Best Travel Gifts for Men. Oars + Alps now offers everything a man could want in his self-care routine, from skincare to muscle recovery to must-have travel products.

Dontae Blinks and his assistant, wind down from a grueling day of shooting, we gear up for the final act of the day: the interview between TrooRa CEO Trystanne Cunningham and NFL athlete, Austin Bryant. Bryant arrived earlier with his 120-pound dog, a Cane Corso named Chief, who has been his loyal companion throughout the day.
We sit down for this interview in Emeryville, California. After a long and exhausting day of shooting the cover for TrooRa Magazine’s Special Sports Issue ‘24, the team is tired but still pushing forward, driven by the artistic energy and creativity that we all crave and enjoy together. As our set designer, cinematographer, and TrooRa videographer Baidi Kamagate, along with photographer
In the vast, echoing amphitheaters of the NFL, where dreams are as frequently made as they are dashed, Austin Bryant’s journey unfolds—a testament to the tenacity and spirit of a professional athlete. On the field, amidst roaring crowds and under glaring lights, every snap is a narrative in itself. Yet, it’s off the field, in the quieter moments, where the essence of his story truly resonates.

F
rom the earliest modern Olympic Games, held in Athens, Greece, in 1896 to the upcoming summer Games this year in Paris, France, the Olympic Games continue to uphold the spirit of community and fair competition for all. Though an array of diverse cultures assemble for the Olympics, one common passion unites all who gather to witness the elaborate event: the love of sports. The Origins of the Olympic Games Although many historians believe that the Olympic Games started several years before, verified ancient records show the first Olympic Games date back to 776 BCE. The event was a 192-meter footrace, and Coroebus—a cook—won the race, making him the first Olympic champion. The Games received its moniker because they were held at Olympia, a revered spot close to the Peloponnese peninsula's western shore in southern Greece. Their impact was so significant that the four-year intervals between the Olympic Games, or Olympiads, became a common way for ancient historians to measure time. Folklore traces the founding of the Games to Heracles, the son of Zeus and Alcmene. By around the sixth century BCE, the event had become the most important Greek sporting event. The ancient Greeks held the Olympic Games every four years in honor of Zeus, and the Games took place between August 6 and September 19.

Coast to Coast: How Ditas’ Founder manages to run a successful restaurant while juggling college and cross-country flights. WRITTEN BY CRISTINA DEPTULA RUNNING THE EXTRA MILE y oung Sausalito restaurateur Nikita Khandheria starts each day with at least a three-mile (4.8 km) run. She says that’s what she needs to release her competitive energy.
“Our team notices a difference in me after I’ve had my run,” she says. “They remind me to go get my exercise, as I’m much easier to deal with then.” An athlete since childhood, Khandheria suggests that if she hadn’t opened Ditas in coastal Sausalito, she might have played rugby professionally. She currently enjoys climbing walls and treadmill jogs, taking phone calls and listening to podcasts while moving her body. Khandheria approaches business with the mindset of an athlete on the field or in the gym, always ready to pivot with changing conditions and determined to keep improving her performance. As her personal aphorism goes, “Excellence is a moving target.”
