Leading up to the master bedroom, the staircase divides the house into two parts: the living area and two bedrooms to one side, and the sauna, garage and master bedroom above it on the other side. The ceramic rabbit is by Nico Masemola and the yellow ceramic pot is by Wonki Ware.
The master bedroom is positioned on the top story of the home, above the garage, affording it spectacular mountain views from the bay window looking out from the bed. Here, a cushioned nook has been created for casual seating from which to enjoy this panorama.
‘It’s genius what my brother did with the shape,’ Jens says with architectural admiration. ‘He normally does big projects like university buildings in Frankfurt or Germany’s Ministry of Internal Affairs – never private housing – so the sober lines of this house are influenced by his pared-back, uncomplicated approach to large-scale buildings.’ Torsten was also responsible for designing the external shutters that are able to close the loggias on either ends of the living space, turning the home into a concealed garapa-clad box when the family is away. ‘I believe in naturally integrating buildings with their given surroundings,’ says the architect. ‘By
