Kigali’s emergence as a top contender in the science and tech sphere, Africa’s own Silicon Valley . WRITTEN BY JESSE ADUMA SILICON SUB-SAHARA
A story of transformation and progress, highlighting Kigali’s painful past, acknowledging its triumphs, and positioning the city as an emerging player in the global tech scene.
R wanda’s capital city, Kigali, is situated in the heart of Rwanda, with a population of over 1 248 000.. Known as one of the safest, cleanest, and most organized African cities, Kigali is fast becoming the center for arts and culture in Rwanda. Additionally, the city’s enthusiastic interest in technology has made it a beacon for science and innovation on the African continent. Changing the narrative from a land ravaged by war and violence to one of peace and prosperity is a feat worthy of nothing but supreme admiration. Only three decades ago, the nation of Rwanda was engulfed in a turbulent civil war that lasted from 1990 to 1994. During this period, the capital city of Kigali suffered a heavy blow during what is now remembered as the Rwandan Genocide. Between April and July of 1994, thousands of Tutsi, a minority ethnic group indigenous to Rwanda, lost their lives in attacks conducted by the Hutu (also an indigenous ethnic group) militias. A moderate number of the Hutu and Twa ethnic tribes also fell in these attacks.
