Autumn 24 Full The Entrepreneurial Spirit Issue Final

The Logistics behind the Event Organizing an event of this scale is a major undertaking. Chef Mimi and her team begin planning about nine months in advance, starting with scouting suitable venues. The growth of the event has necessitated larger spaces, with recent events drawing up to two thousand attendees and leaving another nine hundred on a waiting list. "Space is always important," she says, highlighting the challenges of finding venues that can accommodate the demand while managing waste sustainably. Once the venue is secured, the team launches ticket sales and enters into full production mode. This involves onboarding chefs and winemakers, coordinating with vendors, launching social media campaigns, and facilitating sponsorships. The process is meticulous, with every detail carefully planned to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience for attendees. Building a Network of Chefs Chef Mimi's commitment to collaboration and community is evident in her approach to building the Black Food & Wine Experience. Over the years, she has fostered relationships with over four hundred chefs, ranging from emerging talents to seasoned restaurateurs. "Growing up and seeing a collective kind of mindset, I felt like that's the way to go," she says. This network of chefs not only enriches the event but also strengthens the Black culinary community in Oakland and beyond. Expanding the Impact As the Black Food & Wine Experience continues to grow, Chef Mimi is keen on expanding its reach. Discussions are underway to bring the event to new cities, including Atlanta. "We want to travel and gather more chefs and winemakers and just have the celebration," she states. The goal is to create a national event that celebrates Black culinary excellence and fosters connections within the industry. Challenges in Black Hospitality Chef Mimi understands the challenges facing Black hospitality professionals. Historically, Black individuals have played a significant role in the hospitality industry, yet they have often been undervalued and underpaid. "We haven't been able to resurrect what we've done in the past," she notes, highlighting the need for support, tools, and financial resources. The Black Food & Wine Experience serves as a platform to address these issues, offering networking opportunities and fostering discussions about the industry's future. By bringing together professionals from across the country, the event aims to create a supportive community that can advocate for change and elevate Black culinary talent. Chef Mimi's impact on the Black culinary scene in Oakland is profound and far-reaching. Through her passion for food and commitment to community, she has created an event that not only celebrates Black culinary excellence but also fosters connections and addresses industry challenges. The Black Food & Wine Experience is a testament to the rich diversity within Black cuisine and the power of coming together to share stories, flavors, and cultures. As Chef Mimi continues to expand her influence, her work serves as an inspiration for aspiring chefs and a reminder of the importance of community and collaboration. Her journey from a curious child watching her mother make gravy to a celebrated chef and event organizer is evidence that anything can happen when your passion becomes your purpose.
