encouraged to dress up, whether in African garb or ballroom gowns, fostering an environment where everyone feels comfortable and celebrated. The event is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate, with vibrant attire adding to the overall ambiance. Showcasing Black Culinary Talent One of the most impactful aspects of the Black Food & Wine Experience is its role in highlighting Black culinary talent and businesses. The event serves as a platform for chefs, winemakers, and spirits producers to showcase their products and connect with others. "There are so many brands that people don't know about. They don't know that Black people are producing ice cream, coffee, vegan products, Brazilian and Caribbean cuisine, desserts, and spirits," Chef Mimi highlights. By introducing attendees to these diverse offerings, the event helps to educate and broaden their culinary horizons. Meeting the brand developers and founders creates a deeper connection to the products, enhancing the overall experience. For many attendees, it is an opportunity to discover new favorites and support Black- owned businesses.

A Lifelong Passion for Culinary Arts Chef Mimi's passion for culinary arts was ignited at a young age. “It started when my mother turned flour, oil, and water into gravy. I thought it was very magical to see the science and the product of that process,” she reminisces. At just five years old, she was captivated by the transformation of these simple ingredients into a rich, velvety gravy. This early exposure to the magic of cooking laid the foundation for her lifelong love of food. Growing up in Oakland, Chef Mimi was immersed in a multicultural environment that further fueled her culinary curiosity. Her father, a Black Panther and Black Muslim, instilled in her a sense of community and revolution through food. "We didn't eat pork; we ate very clean. Everything was about revolution and sharing food," she explains. This upbringing, coupled with the diverse cultural influences in her neighborhood, shaped her approach to cooking and her desire to bring people together through food. The Birth of the Black Food & Wine Experience In 2016, Chef Mimi launched the Black Food & Wine Experience, an event that has since become a cornerstone of Oakland's culinary scene. The idea stemmed from her earlier endeavor,

"Bringing It to the Table," a Black culinary competition show. Despite the challenges in getting the show picked up by networks, Chef Mimi's determination to showcase the rich diversity of Black cuisine remained unwavering. The Black Food & Wine Experience was conceived as a platform to celebrate the culinary contributions of Black chefs, winemakers, and spirits producers. "I wanted to capture foods from the diaspora and celebrate Culinary Arts in a way that was inclusive of the multicultural experiences of Black chefs," she explains. The inaugural event was a resounding success, attracting one hundred attendees and featuring various chefs and winemakers. Over the years, it has grown exponentially, now drawing thousands of attendees and expanding to Detroit, Michigan . Creating an Unforgettable Experience Chef Mimi's vision for the Black Food & Wine Experience goes beyond just a culinary event. She aims to create a celebration that engages all the senses. "We tap into the look, the taste, the sound, the energy, the lighting. What you experience in the space goes beyond just an event," she says. The atmosphere is electric, with a sense of community and togetherness that is palpable. Fashion also plays a significant role in the event. Attendees are
