TROORA The Sports Issue SINGLE Blocked

J anelle Kellman, former mayor of Sausalito and current candidate for lieutenant governor, grew up playing all sorts of team sports, from lacrosse to field hockey. While earning her master's in environmental management in the UK, she took up rowing, then started cycling, switching to running ultramarathons after being injured in a crash. “It’s not a matter of integrating sports into my life,” Kellman says. “It’s part of who I am. It’s like meditation for me, a way I keep myself outside and grounded in nature.” For Kellman, sports gave her a sense of teamwork and the drive to build bridges and work together with others to make a difference. She brings this emphasis on coalition building into her civic leadership, where she organized Sausalito’s first Pride Parade last year and arranged for rainbow-colored crosswalks. It’s also evident in her lifelong work as an environmental

lawyer and in her environmental policy activism on Sausalito’s city council and various nonprofits, including San Francisco Baykeeper and the Ecotech Institute. THE PROMISE OF CALIFORNIA’S COAST One of the ecosystems of California that Kellman is most determined to protect is our coastline. “The oceans are an important source of natural food and an inspiration for mankind. We have to be balanced and careful in how we use marine resources and explore new opportunities that also prioritize the health of the marine environment,” she says.
